Snow on the Great Lawn

After the most recent snowfall in New York City, I walked through Central Park to the Great Lawn. The snow looked like an inviting down blanket covering the lawn. The trees danced in the background with their barren branches. The midtown skyscrapers sparkled in the morning sunlight. The entire scene was so peaceful and wintery.

Empire State in Winter

There is a spot on the Great Hill in Central Park where it looks as if the Empire State building is peeking through the treetops. Here is my interpretation.

Goldfish

At the pond in Central Park near 103rd street, I often see goldfish swimming. When the water is relatively clear, it is fun to watch the fish dart around. I created this piece using gouache-painted and origami paper.

Summer Afternoon with Watermelon

I cannot think of a nicer way to spend a sultry summer afternoon then with cooling slices of fresh watermelon! In this piece, I depicted a Manhattan apartment with a breathtaking view of Central Park and Midtown.

Spring Sunrise in Central Park

I love the view of midtown at sunrise in spring. The familiar skyscrapers form an impressive backdrop to the leafy, green treetops of the park.

Central Park in Spring

It's easy to forget that it is still spring when we have temperatures soaring into the 90s! This is one of my favorite views of the park, especially in the spring.

Cherry Blossom Branch

While the cherry blossoms are no longer in bloom in New York City, I am still experimenting with different compositions to capture their fresh, delicate color and grace. Walking through a grove of cherry trees in Central Park the other weekend, I stopped and looked up at the clear, blue sky, framed with branches of cherry blossoms. It was hard to believe that I was standing in one of the largest, busiest cities in the world!

Cherry Blossoms

While the cherry blossoms in the park are beginning to fade now, their delicate, graceful petals are still alive in my imagination. As the petals fall, they swirl to the ground and create a pink, velvety carpet.

Spring in NYC II

This is a second piece that I created of the Great Lawn in spring. I first painted the background in watercolor and then cut out gouache-painted, recycled and origami paper for the rest of the composition. I love all the cherry blossoms that are in full bloom!

Spring in NYC

I walked around the Great Lawn in Central Park over the weekend and the colors of the trees against the brilliant blue sky were stunning. Cherry blossoms are in full bloom in the park. There is no need to travel to Washington D.C. or Japan when such beauty is down the street!

Gerbera Daisy

This weekend, I walked through the Shakespeare Garden in Central Park which is already abloom with flowers. It was a bit cool the day I visited, and the tulips were all closed, I imagine to stay warm. It was beautiful to see so many colorful flowers. While I did not see any gerbera daisies in the garden, they were on my mind as I passed by poppies, bleeding hearts and other spring flowers.

Great Hill in Winter

I enjoy a view of the Great Hill in Central Park from our window. Sadly, after the terrible storm this summer knocked down so many trees, I can now clearly see the landscape of the hill. The barren branches of the trees look as if they are dancing when the icy wind blows.

Christmas Tree

The first snowfall of the season transformed the city this weekend into a winter wonderland! This is a scene of Central Park in the snow with a Christmas tree in the foreground.

City Skyline: Central Park

In this piece, I portrayed a treetop in Central Park with the Citigroup building in the background at sunrise. In the northern section of Central Park, which is hilly, you can almost forget about the skyscrapers as the trees tower above the horizon.

November Afternoon in Central Park

Last weekend, we enjoyed a long walk through Central Park. The weather was relatively mild and when the sun peaked out, the foliage looked brilliant against the NYC skyline. I particularly enjoyed the warm red, yellow, and orange leaves glowing in the sun.

Fall Moon

Last Sunday, my husband and I took a walk in Central Park around 4pm. We were not prepared for the sun to set around 4:30pm! Turning around, we headed back home and saw a full moon shining through the trees. It looked so large and luminous against the near-barren tree branches. I sketched this vision after arriving home and then created this piece using gouache-painted paper.

Great Hill in Fall

I am very fortunate to have a view of Central Park from my living room window. The trees in the park are turning shades of yellow, orange and the occasional red. From a distance, it looks like a colorful quilt of warmly textured patterns. This piece of the Great Hill section is an attempt to capture that scene.

Green NYC at Night in Autumn

I was inspired to create this piece after spending some time in Central Park on Sunday and envisioning colorful autumn leaves with their organic shapes against the linear skyscrapers of New York City. I used gouache paint to create the inky night sky, black construction paper to create the cityscape and gouache-painted paper to create the moon and trees. I really enjoyed cutting out the oak leaves, trying to make each shape unique, and figuring out the best way to position them in the composition.

Autumn Trees

This weekend, when I biked in Central Park I noticed a few sycamore and oak trees clustered together. The leaves were beginning to turn and they looked striking against the bright, blue sky. I tried to capture that color in this piece. The sky is a wash of watercolor and the trees are cut out with gouache-painted paper.
