Giraffe

I had a lot of fun creating this piece! Giraffes are fascinating animals with their long necks and spotted bodies. I used black construction paper to cut out the giraffe and gouache-painted paper for the spots and details on the giraffe's body.

Riding the N Train at Night

Taking the subway over the Queensborough Bridge, which connects Manhattan and Queens, affords a magnificent view of the New York City skyline. At nighttime, it's worth the ride to catch the twinkling city lights as the subway rumbles over the bridge and turns into Queens. I commuted along this route for five years and always found it uplifting to savor the sweeping view of Midtown from the subway window.

Seal

In this cut-out, I aim to portray a seal. The designs on the seal reflect the ocean environment - various seaweeds, the bluish-green of the water and grasses near the shore.

Dog

This is the second piece in my cut-out animal series. I intentionally used bold colors and fun designs to appeal to children.

Elephant

No, I did not run into an elephant on the way home from work! I am creating a series of fun designs of animals for children. They are all black cut-outs of animals with brightly colored decorations. I like to experiment with the contrast of the colorful paper against the black design.

Magical Snowfall

I think there is something magical about snow falling in the city. The snow transforms the city into a peaceful, sparkling wonderland. At a time of year when the city feels particularly bleak and gray, the snow symbolizes hope, beauty and tranquility.

Dreaming of Spring

For at least the next few days, New York City is experiencing a cold snap. My thoughts keep wandering to spring, green leaves, sunshine and of course, bright, colorful flowers. I created this collage with recycled, color-aid and gouache-painted paper.

Winter Flower

A bright, colorful flower sends a burst of hope and life in the midst of cold, short winter days.
