Empire State in Winter

There is a spot on the Great Hill in Central Park where it looks as if the Empire State building is peeking through the treetops. Here is my interpretation.

View from My Window, 2010

This is another piece in the "Six Views of the Empire State" series. I've made this scene in both collage and watercolor several times now and it always gives me a new perspective to revisit it.

Clementine

As winter approaches, I always look forward to clementine season. There is something special about this sweet fruit with the fragrant citrus aroma that only appears on the market for a few months every year. Even the typical packaging, a little wooden crate with orange netting, sets the fruit apart. I hope that you will think of this piece when you savor your next clementine!

Central Park in Fall

This is the second piece in my "Six Views of the Empire State" series. I love all the warm colors that blanket Central Park in the fall. Best wishes to everyone for a happy Thanksgiving!

Empire State from the Hudson

I'm working on a new series called "Six Views of the Empire State", as in the Empire State building. This is the first piece which shows the view of the Empire State from the Hudson River with the Hudson River Greenway in the foreground. It's a lovely bike ride on a summer day and is beautifully landscaped as you reach lower Manhattan. Stay tuned for more pieces in the series ... !

Red Poinsettia

Poinsettias truly create a festive mood during the winter holiday season! I love the contrast of the deep red flower against the evergreen decorations and white snow of the winter holidays.

Pomegranate

At many fruit markets in New York City, vendors will cut open a pomegranate to display the shiny, jewel-like seeds inside. I never knew before what a pomegranate looked like or that such an oddly shaped, lumpy fruit could contain such beautiful surprises inside!

Hot Cup of Tea

What better way to enjoy a chilly winter day, then with a hot cup of tea while watching the snow fall. What is your favorite way to enjoy a snowstorm?

Watermelon

Watermelon is one of my all-time favorite summer fruits! There is no better way to cool down on a hot summer day than with a refreshing slice of watermelon.

Cherries

I'm creating a small series of some favorite summer fruits. More to come ...

Summer Beach Fun

This piece was inspired by a summer day spent at Robert Moses State Park. The Fire Island lighthouse is in the background. There were so many children playing in the sand and having such a good time. What are your memories of visiting the beach as a child?

Sandpipers

As fall approaches, I'm thinking about the sunny days spent at the beach this summer! On one trip to Robert Moses State Park, I was captivated by the sandpipers darting up and down the beach. With their stick-like legs, they would race toward the waves, presumably looking for food, and then scurry away as the wave crashed against the sand. Somehow they managed to escape a thorough soaking!

Summer by the Ocean

Somehow it doesn't quite feel like summer without a trip to the beach! Of course, it would be even better to live by the ocean. Here I created a home with picturesque views of the ocean ... and refreshing watermelon for visitors!

Summer's Bounty

I really enjoyed creating this piece! I wanted to showcase the bounty of fruits and vegetables available in late summer. What better way then on display in a modern, sun-drenched apartment!

Goldfish

At the pond in Central Park near 103rd street, I often see goldfish swimming. When the water is relatively clear, it is fun to watch the fish dart around. I created this piece using gouache-painted and origami paper.

Brooklyn Bridge from the Governors Island Ferry

We went to Governors Island on July 4th. It was great fun taking the ferry (not great fun waiting in a long line in the hot sun for the ferry, though)! Though it's a short ferry ride, the views of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and, of course, the Brooklyn Bridge are beautiful. This is my interpretation.

Swinging on the Hudson at Sunset

Two weekends ago, my husband and I went to Pier 54 for the Hudson River Park's MoonDance. It was a fun night of swing dancing to a live band! I was so taken by the incredible view of the sun setting over New Jersey, as couples danced and the band played. The idea for this piece popped into my head and I was really excited to finally have the time to create it this week.

I painted the scene of the sunset over the Hudson with watercolor and cut-out the rest of the composition from black card stock, using an xacto knife.

July 4th

While I did not go to the West Side highway to watch the fireworks last night, I did see them on TV. In some ways, it affords a better view since they shoot from so many angles. There were several shots of colorful fireworks with the Empire State in the background. I also loved the panoramic shots of the whole city. It really gives you a sense of New York City's scale!

Morningside Farmers' Market

Every Saturday from June through September there is a farmers' market at Morningside Park. I always see them setting up early Saturday morning as I bike to Central Park. On my way back, I usually stop to admire the display of colorful fruits and vegetables. There is always a table with berries, cherries and peaches and another with greens, root vegetables and squahes. I love the artful composition of colors, shapes and textures!

Summer Afternoon with Watermelon

I cannot think of a nicer way to spend a sultry summer afternoon then with cooling slices of fresh watermelon! In this piece, I depicted a Manhattan apartment with a breathtaking view of Central Park and Midtown.

Ice Cream

Today is a real scorcher in New York City with temperatures soaring into the 90s! It's the perfect day for a frozen treat. Hope you all stay cool!

Summer in New York City

New York City truly comes to life in summer. This piece shows the Midtown skyline from Astoria, where we used to live. There are not usually many sailboats along that stretch of the East River, though I think it would be an amazing experience to sail past the city!

Sunrise Orchid

Wouldn't it be lovely to welcome every day with a sunrise orchid?

Tuesday, June 1, 2010

Moonlight Orchid

This is the second piece in my orchid series. This orchid made me think of the moon shining in a midnight sky, hence the title "Moonlight Orchid".

Spring Orchid

I'm pleased to share my first piece in a new series of orchid collages. I received a stunning fuschia orchid as a gift about a month ago. The flowers are continuing to bloom beautifully and I've wanted to interpret it artistically. This weekend, inspiration hit and I began work on this series. Speaking of orchids, did you know that vanilla is part of the orchid family?

Spring Sunrise in Central Park

I love the view of midtown at sunrise in spring. The familiar skyscrapers form an impressive backdrop to the leafy, green treetops of the park.

Central Park in Spring

It's easy to forget that it is still spring when we have temperatures soaring into the 90s! This is one of my favorite views of the park, especially in the spring.
